Idaho has been discovered by thousands of people from around the world. They come for the many attractions to the state from Sun Valley in the south to Coeur d' Alene to the north. There are awesome rivers, lakes, streams and much more to marvel at.
Morley Nelson discovered something else that once again put Idaho on the map. After World War II Morley moved to Idaho and fell in love with the "Birds of Prey" that made the Snake River Canyon in Southern Idaho their home. He was so fascinated with the Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Hawks and dozens of other raptors that he worked hard to protect their natural home.
Morley was instrumental in working with electrical power companies to modify their transmission lines as to protect these awesome creatures. He influenced the creation of the World Center Birds of Prey which is located about 20 miles south of Boise, Idaho near the town of Kuna. Visitors come by the thousands to view the home of these awesome Raptors. The center has worked hard to protect several rare and endangered species. It is known world wide for it's efforts to protect the Peregrine Falcon.
The center offers daily tours open to the public. It's purpose is to educate the public as to the importance of these rare and special Raptors.
The Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area was also influenced by Morley Nelson. The area encompasses 600,000 acres of land and was established in 1993 to protect the unique environment that is the lifeblood of raptors that call this area home. It supports one of the world's densest concentrations of nesting birds of prey. Eagles, falcons, hawks and owls are a common site.
An amazing 16 raptor species nest in the National Conservation Area and an additional 8 species either winter or use the area during migration. See Raptor Species
The Canyon walls of the Snake River Canyon are riddled with history including ancient Indian Petroglyphs that are thousands of years old.
Many that have seen Morley Nelson's World Center Birds of Prey and The Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area argue it should be included as one of the natural wonders of the world.
