Windows Vista looks at the world differently - Who am I writing for?

Hi folks, I entered the world of Windows Vista over the weekend and purchased a new notebook computer with Vista for Windows installed.  My office computer is a desktop with Windows XP installed.

I was going along just fine over the weekend with my new notebook computer and didn't mind some of the new twists on windows Vista but then I started carusing different websites including my own Search Idaho Homes and was shocked when all the blogs I had written looked totally different and distorted when I viewed them through windows Vista.

I thought maybe Point2Agent who I have my website with had some technical problems but when I came into my office this a.m. my blogs look just like I wrote them through Windows XP but when I open my site up again using Vista my blogs look distorted again!

So my question for those of you that know what is going on is this:  If I write my blogs using Windows Vista, they look different through Windows XP and vice versa.  Is there a different way I should be writing my blogs and is there a reason blogs have a totally different layout in Vista vs. Windows XP?  This is confusing!

Another frustration....I own a photo editing software program called Picture It! by microsoft and I have used it for years. It is a real simple and uncomplicated program.  I loaded Picture It on my notebook and after I loaded it I could not open Windows.  I kept getting an error that said I had an issue with Adobe Flash Player but I could not access the internet to correct the problem.  I had to uninstall the program and then do a system restore to correct the problem and access the internet.  After I did this I attempted to load the latest Flash Player but I was told I had the latest version.  I still cannot load a simple program like Picture it! on my notebook computer.

I thought computers and software were supposed to improve, not go backwards!

Geroge - I would love to be able to help you - for all the information you've shared with me re: real estate and life in general.  And I had a lap top with XP and my office computer with Vista... but I had no problem with the two of them nor when I bought my new Vista powered laptop.  So I'm quite surprised you're having this interesting challenge!

I bet you'll hear from some tech-knowledgeable person!  If not - I have a great 1-800 you can call....

Eva - Thank you so much my friend.  I guess I will have to have the eye doctor look at my eyes to make sure they are not going out!  LOL.   Just teasing.  I showed it to a computer friend of mine a little while ago and he can't understand why the display is so different but it is.  Thanks and have a great day!

George - I can't help either....I am still using Windows 2000 on my lap top and desktop. If it ain't broke, I don't want to upgrade until absolutely necessary.    When my son got a new desktop with VISTA, I can't believe how different everything is.   I will probably panic when I will have to make a switch.

George - With Vista you are now on the bleeding edge of technology. I have heard alot of strange stuff about it not working with older software so I have put it off as long as I could.   Good Luck!

Interesting - I just bought a new Notebook with Vista approx. 3 weeks ago..........My office laptop has XP.......I have to say I fought the transition tooth and nail.............and asked for a downgrade on my VISTA - they are available.........but man oh man they make you go through the loops..........you could probably get a savy technician to do it for you...........Why it does what it does? who knows - I searched and googled and there were so many negative reviews for a multitude of issues..........Although I don't think I saw your problem there......that doesn't sound like a Vista issue.....but heck i'm not a techy! :-)  Good luck!

James - Makes me wonder why they even released it!

Liz - Thanks for the tip!

Steve - It may be Bill Gates world but I am about to switch to Apple!

George - I have not looked at my blogs yet using Vista and its important to know how all potential viewers are seeing our sites.  With your XP / vista issue, you have made me wonder how a vista user as a viewer would see a site made on a mac as well.

See?  Again, it's stories like this that make me scared of technology...

This doesn't sound good.  I've put off the switch to vista to avoid these complications for as long as possible. But now if I read you correctly, you are saying that those on vista view all our web published stuff differently.  Thanks for the head up!!!

Megan - Smart girl!

Marlene - I thought technology was supposed to get better and make our lives easier!

Tina - Thanks....I am not the only one confused by Vista!

George - I am no expert at Windows Vista, but I do know that it is just an operating system.  It should have no bearing whatsoever on your Blogs or Browser.  I may be wrong, but it could just be a "view" setting conflict somewhere in the browser, or in Windows Vista.  I would try the Windows FAQ's and see if any other users have run into this same issue. I use Windows Vista on my desktop home office computer and have not experienced any issues like this.  I am off to see what else I can find for you in hope to get you a solution.  Back in a few!!  :-)

George - here's a site I found that might be able to help. Why don't you put a comment and a link to this post and see what we get?  It's a good start anyway until I can find you something better!  Till then....  :-)

Hey George, I have XP on my home computer & Vista on my lap top & they seem to be the same view on my blogs... I wonder if it is simply the screen size difference that shifts things a bit & makes the layout different..  I'll come next door & take a look!   ;)
Posted by Don Wixom, "Looking out for your next move..."tm (RE/MAX Advantage Nampa, ID) about 11 years ago

Don - Thanks dude, I would have to bring my notebook in to show you the vast difference.  It is really throwing me off. See you tomorrow my friend.

Posted by George Tallabas, Idaho Real Estate (RE/MAX Advantage) about 11 years ago

George,
Vista and XP are operating systems, they have no bearing once so ever on how you view a webpage. The only thing that could account for those kind of differences would be using s different web browser (explorer, firefox, safari, etc)

It is more likely that your laptop screen is widescreen and therefore distorting your blog. You need to right click on the desktop go to personlize and then select display settings. Play with the resolution to see which one works best with your screen size.

If you have a third party video card (Possibly Nvidia depending on the brand) you may need to go into the video cards control panel and look for something called "change flat panel scaling" try turning on the video card manufacturers scaling (if the card is Nvidia it will say use Nvidia scaling)

One of these things or a combination of the 2 should solve your problem.

Hope this helps.

Rob - Thanks so much but here is my concern.  I write my blog and it looks normal to me but others that view it and have systems like my wide screen notebook will view it very distorted.  This is frustrating and I know of no way of correcting it.
Posted by George Tallabas, Idaho Real Estate (RE/MAX Advantage) about 11 years ago

George,

There is no way to correct it. If you included the code to keep it a uniform size regardless of the screen setting then it would be so small as to be unreadable.

But here is the good news. This is not an uncommon problem for people with a newer laptops, especially with Vista wide-screen. It is not only your blog that will look like this to them, they will run into this on other pages as well, so usually within the first few weeks they will ask the right person or call tech support and get it fixed.

I really wouldn't worry about it, try looking at your blog on a mac in Safari, or in Firefox, it will also look different. Unless you want to host diffrent versions and code the site to recognize the viewers browser you will always have slight differences.

The problem just seems larger to you because you experienced it on your own computer, keep blogging away and don't sweat it.

Rob - Thank you....this is tough for perfectionists that want what they create to look right! LOL!  As a good friend was told me....I will try to put my "Big Boy Pants On And Get Over It" because it appears there isn't a darn thing I can do about it.  I appreciate your knowledge and for sharing it.
Posted by George Tallabas, Idaho Real Estate (RE/MAX Advantage) about 11 years ago
George is it possible on your XP computer you have IE 6 and on Vista you have IE7?  The newer 7 is more like Firefox and it distorts pages written in 6.

George,  I need a new laptop, but I hear many negative comments about Vista - I plan to buy a Dell with XP which they make available,  Karen

I feel your pain!  Dunno about the blog view difference.  But I do have problems trying to install any older software... It conflicts with our local MLS website too! Yikes! They're working on that, but it sure is annoying.  i tried to install Office 2000 on it and it killed it so I had to undo that and now have no Office software - loverly.
