Getting Back To Basics - It works in Golf and real estate as well

As a golfer I can't tell you the number of gadgets I have purchased over the years to try to help me develop a reliable golf swing.   I have to laugh when I see the movie "Tin Cup" and think about all the gadgets I have used over the years that in reality were a great topic for parties and nothing else.

A few years ago I purchased a book written by golf legend Tom Watson titled "Back to Basics".  I can honestly tell you that by reading this book and applying the basic principals of golf I went on to play some of the best golf I have played.

When I think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent by golfers each year on the latest and greatest golf aid I shutter.  There are basic principals to golf that applied 50 years ago and still apply today. Use those principals and golfers have a reasonable chance of playing respectable golf.

Real estate in my opinion is no different.  I have seen Realtors hiring coaches, buying systems and leaving office A to join office B in an attempt to achieve success in this crazy business of Real Estate.

Real estate is basically the same today as it was 50 years ago with just more technology in the mix.  People want to work with an agent they believe in and trust.  They want to know they can trust us to do the things we say we are going to do.  They want to know we will be honest and given them sound advice and care about them.

I can't tell you the number of clients that tell me they listed their home with a Realtor and either never or rarely heard from them.  I can't tell you the number of Realtors that complain to me that when they have a co-op transaction they have to do all the work because the "other" Realtor won't do what she/he should be doing to take care of their end of the transaction.

There is no coach, system, or Broker that can create a passionate and driven real estate agent.  This is a choice each of us make every day of our lives.   Our word has value or it doesn't.  We love what we do or we don't.   We care about others or we don't.

It's as simple as "Getting Back to Basics"

Rick Callaham - Spokane Home Search Expert I will have to say amen on this. It's just like Michael Jordan says, it's all about the basics and fundamentals. People want to build a big business before they build a decent business. Framework first. And then build on it.

You are exactly right.  If you do your job to the best of your ability.  Give your clients what it states that you will do in "Working with Real Estate Agents"  -  Then you will have success.  And nothing generates more business than good word of mouth referrals from your past clients.  When you leave them smiling at the end of the day, they will remember you.

Rick - So very true and Michael Jordan had it going on.

Ashley - Leaving them smiling at the end of the day is what it is all about....thanks!

Hi George..what goes around comes around...it's about getting back to basics. We're looking for the silver bullet in life and business as we are in a want it now society, That's why staging has become so popular, so our prospects can see what they can have, vacant homes are hard to sell, as many people cannot imagine how it will work for them.

Getting face to face with consumers.....on the phone or in person works, all the other stuff is just there to get you to this point, so find out how to do this effectively and efficiently and you'll see continued year after year success, don't be a secret agent.

George.. this maybe a Post to repeat your story about the Seattle agent and her success with ...just 5,000 business cards...I love telling your story to fellow Realtors.

Cheers

George,

Simple and true. Life really gets good when people start caring back!

But that is the whole point, isn't it?

Fred - Thanks as always my friend for your support.  Have a great day!

Steven - Yes, when people care back it makes the whole difference in the world.

George - it really IS pretty simple. No magic bullets, no gimmicks. It boils down to taking the personal responsibility and interest do what needs to be done, or not. Consumers, for the most part I think, will not be fooled by gimmicks and puffery. Give them what is needed to do the job and be trusted and respected and it will all work out.

Hi George: As a new golfer and an old Realtor ;-), and a book reader on everything......I agree. Focus is what we need playing golf, and the same thing as a Realtor. Giving our buyers/sellers our complete attention, helps us drive for a hole in one!! Success!

George - wise words to those new and old to real estate. After our conversation this past week about my experience with the cross agent I am working with now, is frustrating indeed. However, I know that even though I have covered some ground for him, I know I am doing my part for my client. As for golf...we need to get a foursome in Vegas.....and hit the course!!

George - you are wise beyond your years. -- It is back to the basics.  The technology is great, but it is the relationship which is nutured which is key!  I just got a card from clients I worked with over 4 years ago -- about the birth of their new baby -- this is what makes this job so rewarding --

George, you bring up a true point. My son plays golf and is learning thru The First Tee of New Orleans. This is Tiger Woods organization to help the our youth learn the game of golf. They have nine core value that they go over each session. This week value was on honesty. Has I listen in yesterday. I thought how we as Realtor should have this type of instruction each week. My personal theme this week will be Honesty. Not that we don't do this each everyday but some times we need reminders.

Joan - Thank you my dear friend.  I always love hearing from you. I hope all is well.

Frank - Great point you bring up and how blessed your son is to be involved in such a great program.  We all need to focus on the basic principals of life and apply them to our business.  This would change a lot of lives for the better.

Truly well said my friend. Sometimes it is difficult though to show people the advantages of the basics. I guess there will always be people who step over the Dollars to pick up the Pennys.

George...I've gone way, way back to basics with golf.  All the way back to watching it on TV or going to see the games in person.  Saves lots of time, money, and excuses.

I need all of those excuses for not doing well for other areas of my life.  I must conserve.

Cheers,

Kathleen

P.S.  I'm a clever old lady!  Never strayed far from basics in real estate.

George: Yours are words of wisdom for sure.  In all walks of life people seem to forget that in the end what counts is your honesty, integrity and willingness to put others before yourself.  If you truly strive to serve the best interests of your client I believe they will always be happy and they will be back.

George- I don't understand why Realtors jump from company to company. Are they looking for the reinvention of the wheel? This is all about the basics and relationships. Keep your head down, and follow through. It's that simple.

George- About that golf. I have noticed that one training tool seems to help when I don't have time to practice. IT's the Medicus. I can practice with it for about 10 minutes a day, every day for a week, and then play golf for the first time in months, and hit every fairway. It's amazing

Hi George...I'm glad this post re-surfaced.  The timing was perfect.

An hour or so ago I read Bob Stewarts latest post on Growth Leader.  I was tempted to look into but perhaps I'll just hold off for now.

Take care,

Kate
