I have written before about how Dr. Laura's little statement "Now, go do the right thing" has caught my attention in the past. Once again Dr. Laura's little statement hit home. I signed up for her email because I love her human stories. Yesterday I receive another email and her story just touched my heart Human Global Warming. This story is about a man Dr. Laura met in a restaurant that impacted her by "Doing the right thing".
Dr. Laura ends all of her radio programs by saying "Now, go do the right thing". This is such a simple but powerful statement. If everyone just thought about "Doing the right thing" we would have a lot less issues in our world.
In my real estate business I see clients attacking Realtors, Realtors attacking Realtors, Realtors attacking Title Companies, Builders attacking Realtors, and on and on.
I would like us to consider two things going into the New Year:
- "Seek first to understand than to be understood" and
- "Do the right thing"
As the 7 habits of highly effective people suggests "Seeking first to understand than to be understood" will help us to value the other person enough to want to understand their position.
"Doing the right thing" simply means to do what is best for the other person. Too many times we "Do what is best for us" in most situations. For a change I would like us to consider "Doing the right thing" for others.
This just may change the world "One person at a time".

Beth - Thank you and have an awesome New Year!
Hi George,
We'll second and third your sentiments! May you have a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
George - thanks for sharing this wise and powerful message...something we should all take to heart and keep in mind always. Wishing you the best in 2008!
Jeff
George,
Had this discussion this morning with one of my agents. Always put your client first...always...
A week ago a client called to look at a foreclosure and I met him there. This property was priced right. My wife has been after me to purchase a "good deal". I told my client to decide in next two or three days if he wanted to pursue this property or not because if he did not then I would like to. The next day we submitted his offer and he got the property. I am happy for him. Always put your clients best interest ahead of your own, always!
George,
I love this reminder. I try to live my life by those four little words that can go a long way.... DO THE RIGHT THING! So simple! I'm going to adapt your other rule as well.... its a good one!
Mike - Thanks for sharing a great story and have a wonderful New Year
Martin - Thank you my friend and i wish you well
George.
I was faced with a "Do the right thing" moment this week when a builder client of mine asked me to change a sales contract so he could hide income from "Big Brother" (the IRS). I explained that I couldn't do such a thing and that I would simply walk away although it represents a large commission to me and probably five more next year. After several days of nasty conversations he agrees with me and we are doing the right thing together.
I may lose him as a client but will gain my sanity back. All to often people lose their perspective and don't do the right thing.
Happy New Year!
Tim
Tim - Good for you for "Doing the right thing". I am sure you sleep better at night than many like your client. Have a great New Year.
Judy - Amen! and Happy New Year to you.
George.... You are so awesome! Thanks for sharing! It all starts with us!
Have a blessed 2008!
Don
Hi George - what a simple thing it should be to 'go do the right thing', but reality seems to make it more difficult for some people. I wonder why that is? I always keep "The Golden Rule" in mind - if I don't want it done to me, I surely will not do it to someone else......simple!
Happy New Year!
Ann
Absolutely agree - Now go do the right thing. But Dr. Laura scares me. She's too judgy for my taste!
Vickie - Thank you and Happy New Year to you my friend.
Eva - Thank you my dear friend. I wish you all the best.
My goal is to follow more closely the tenents of the St. Francis Prayer...
Do the next right thing!
