The new trend in home staging

I thought I had seen it all as a Realtor until today!  A past friend contacted me about 2 weeks ago and is in the market for buying residential real estate.  I have been emailing him several listings the past two weeks and he emailed me the MLS numbers of the homes he wanted to see last night.  I called and made appointments and met my buyer and his wife at one of the homes.  It was your average little starter home that needed some TLC and we noticed a few things that seemed a little strange and then the Mrs. lets out a loud laugh while in the kitchen.  I go running in there to see that she opened the dishwasher door and there in the bottom tray were all the sellers bills and a bag of candy!

This adds a whole new twist on home staging!

You have to hand it to the Sellers...they wanted to remove the clutter from the kitchen counter! It's probably a good thing they didn't place these items in the oven! :)

Don - We didn't dare open anything else after this!

I don't blame you

George - very funny indeed. This brings a whole new meaning to cleaning up your debts!! Then again, Watching your money going down the drain if they are credit card bills. Did you actually take this picture? I love it!! As for the bag of Candy(i)...well I will plead the 5th on that one. Hahaaa

Candace - Yes I did shoot this photo with my camera phone...I just had to!

George - I heard of people stowing stuff in the oven, but not the dishwasher. That is definately a new one on me.
Posted by Jill Wente - Spring TX Real Estate (Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors) about 1 year ago
I am sure I have done that in the past to clear the counter tops in a hurry.

I had some ladies that used to clean my house... I always felt like they used the dishwasher as a file cabinet to just get stuff out of the way (because they didn't rinse first or anything).  This is a whole new level.  lol

Posted by Chris Fisher of StagersLISTWebsites.com (StagersLIST.com) about 1 year ago
Randy - The thing about this one is it looks like it has been there for awhile!
Posted by George Tallabas - Idaho Real Estate (RE/MAX Advantage) about 1 year ago
Don't open the closet, the stuff inside might just collapse on you. Too funny!
Posted by Rob Arnold, metro Orlando full service, investor friendly & foreclosure Realtor (Sand Dollar Realty Group, Inc.) about 1 year ago
As a professional organizer I have seen alot of different storage ideas. And yes a dishwasher was one of them. It didn't work anymore so my client said she just threw stuff in there that  had no other place to go. It was her version of a junk drawer!

Chris - Yes it is a whole new level!

Rob - We didn't dare open anything else!

Tara - Too funny!

George - about 6 months ago I had a showing where the seller had 'hidden' the cats litter box.....in the shower.  And then when we got our composure from laughing and went into the bedroom, they had stashed the dog - crate and all - in the bottom of the closet.  Poor thing just looked at us like he was in prison!

I use my dishwasher way too much to be able to store anything in it!

Posted by Carol Smith (Concept Builders/Shamrock Valley) about 1 year ago
George, very funny. I know when showings are quick sellers stuff things anywhere and every where.

George - that was just the chuckle I needed today.  When I tell people to get it off the kitchen counter I really don't care where it goes.  I'd give these homeowners an A+ for ingenuity.

Carol - Too funny my friend

Missy - This just caught me off guard!

Maureen - It was definately the chuckle I and my clients needed!

I know a lot of people put things in the washer or the dryer - so I guess it's just as logical to use the dishwasher if it's handy.
Posted by Sharon Simms St Pete FL - CRS CIPS CLHMS RSPS (ALVA International, Inc.) about 1 year ago

That's a new one!  Thanks for the laugh!

Hey, did you sell the house?

George -- now that is what I call creativity -- I guess the homeowner doesn't use the dishwasher -- It's better than the last time I heard a client scream -- they found bones in the basement of an old home -- we found out it was a former pet!  Oh my!

Sharon - It's a new one on me!

Janice - No my friend, I did not

Gary - LOL...new use I had not thought of

Joan - Yes, this is for sure creativity...I just didn't expect it!

that's some trick, i think my buyers mihgt get turned off though
Posted by Jeffrey Dolfinger (24/7 Realty Inc.) about 1 year ago
Im thinking that since the dishwasher comes along with the house, a future buyer has every right to check it out! Not so sure that filing billis and correspondance in the dishrack says "buy me!" LOL! thanks for the snicker George!

When I was selling my house in California to move to Idaho i would hide everything in the dryer especially when the Realtor would call and say " Oh, I am in your neighborhood and i want to bring my client by". I said OK where are you? reply: Around the corner. I am so so grateful for my huge dryer at the time. And yes i did throw my kids toys in my dish washer. When your under the gun you get clever

George, consumption has hit a point that we don't need everything we own, or use it. I confess I have a mini fridge I've never turned on, but your photo with the dishwasher is funny!

Maria - Thank you my friend and I am glad you are now in Idaho

Adam - So true, we were shocked to see in in the dishwasher!

Gary - Thanks, this was just hysterical!

George ~ that is such a funny story, made even better with your photo!  It reminded me years ago when I came home from school, and opened the dishwasher to put in my coffee cup and what did I see?  Something on the top rack, all wrapped up in aluminum foil and steaming away!  I ran to get my mother, who said, "Oh, that's a new way I've discovered to steam the salmon for dinner!"  That was a new one....and then I opened the dryer and found a head of lettuce in a pillow case!!  Naturally, my mother learned that was a quick way to dry the lettuce for the salad!

If I did that, it would be the one time some helpful soul decided to start the dishwasher!

That's great. Very funny. All those checklists for sellers... we can now add the idea that they could put all that stuff in the dishwasher. I wonder how many people actually open the dishwasher when they walk through the house? Maybe if it is a second walk through?
Posted by A Crye-Leike Blogger, Angie Vandenbergh (Crye-Leike, Realtors) about 1 year ago
So funny!  Doesn't the homeowner realize that buyers look in the dishwasher too?  What's next, the freezer?
Posted by Kristina, KFM Staging & Design - A Minnesota Home Staging Company (KFM Staging & Design) about 1 year ago

Okay, benefit of the doubt, they quickly hid their clutter --

what would have been bad is if there had been dirty dishes in it as well.  Now that would be yucky!

George,
That is proof that people really do open up cabinets, closets, and dishwashers! At least they made an effort. :)

Maureen - It was just a hilarious experience

Roberta - That is a very good question!

Vanessa - That is what we said as well

Kim - Very true my friend

Angie - Almost every female buyer I have opens the range and dishwasher

Kristina - Makes one wonder what they were thinking!

Karen - True and it looked like the bills and candy had been there awhile!

Anthea - Yes maam...very true

Posted by George Tallabas - Idaho Real Estate (RE/MAX Advantage) about 1 year ago

George - thanks for the laugh! Too funny! Were there any 100 Grand candy bars in there to help pay those bills? (Bad pun, I know.)

Maybe it was a cleansing ritual ;-)? Sweets and money owed....not something we ever want too much of.

You have to give it to them, it was a clever way to hide stuff!

My purse was always in the dishwasher when I did open houses!  Give the Sellers A for effort!  Multi-tasking with food in alum foil - LOL!
Posted by Margaret Innis - We Stage New England (Decorate To Sell, LLC ) about 1 year ago

Yes Kristina.................THE FREEZER!!  This shopaholic used the fridge and dishwasher for storage as well!

These photos are from a condo I helped Virginia Tatseos (http://stage-show-sell.com) stage, and it was unbelievable!  The owner had stuff crammed into every nook and cranny!  It's a sad story, actually.  The owner died and no one in her family stepped up to clean the place out.  Virginia took on the job and orchestrated the entire process, including two estate sales.

Sad tale?  Yes.  But we sure had alot of laughs during the process!

Next time tell your clients if they really need to stash something for that last minute showing - under the bed and in the clothes washer or dryer are the least likely places a seller will look!  Great picture!

WOW, well you do have to hand it to the homeowners, they used the space wisely !! and the bills were filed in between the wires. Maybe they thought that they had staged the dishwasher. When I first started to read your entry, and saw the top part of the photo I thought, oh my they have actually staged an open dishwasher..then, well, at least they were trying to help !!! Thanks, made me laugh this morning...
