Google national reverse telephone book - You should advise your family/friends

This is true, I checked out several phone numbers, so pass it along. You tech savy Realtors probably already know this but I thought I would pass this new Google tool around for the rest of us.

Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book. If you have the web on your cell phone you can obtain the same information on it.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Please look up your own number.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: Google and Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e.555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.

Check your own number on Google and although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this. Please share this information with friends and family.

Happy computing!

George - Thanks for the info and the heads up. I will pass this on to others. I think it would be a good idea to take your name off the list. In this day and age you never know.

Also, if there is a potential danger, why does Google have this feature?

Hey George- I had sent this out some time ago to some friends and family awhile back when I was informed as well. Scary stuff for sure. I did it but it came up with the wrong address and but darn close, too close for comfort. Great awareness for sure!!

Hey George, I've known about this for a while. My situation is like Ryan's. However, blocking Google from showing it is only a start. The real questioon is whre is Google getting the information from? that's how you need to nip the problem in the bud. There are several reverse directories out there for people to do this kind of search and they all might not be a generous as Google and allow your info to be blocked.

Hi George,

Google has been doing this for quite some time.  I recommend telling everyone you know that has children.  We removed ours about 2 years ago.

I'm waiting for them to do this with license plates.  You know its only a matter of time.

Thank you, I will check that out and arrange to block it - that has to be scary for people with children.  That is an unjustifiable invasion of my privacy.  Karen

George, I tried it and my info didn't come up but it did on the sites that were advertising on that google page with no way to request removal.
Posted by Michael Eisenberg, Bellingham Realtor (BuyerTours Realty) over 2 years ago

Does it work on numbers that are restricted (you are "unlisted")?

This site (http://www.whitepages.com/) has had it for years, and I have always found it a handy tool because I remember plenty of phone numbers (ok, now I have them stored in my cell phone) but I could never remember addresses.

Michael - Thanks and good luck

Joseph - I don't know Googles rules on unlisted numers.  Take care.

Is there a way to have google block this information?  If so, how does one going about getting this blocked? It does seems like a big safety issue.
Posted by Joan Whitebook, ABR,e-Pro,CEBA Southern New Hampshire (Buyer's Option Realty Services) over 2 years ago

Joan - Just go to Google and put in your number complete with area code and click search.  When your information comes up click to view it.  You will then see an option that says Request to have your name removed from this list

I hope this helps and have a great day.

Goerge...The Message does not ciome up for me...request to remove your name?

Have a great day!

George,

Wow quite surprising huh? I have removed mine as well. Even though the map was inaccurate. I just felt uncomfortable with much ease of information.

I have used that feature for a long time.  I noticed in the last few months that many do not work unless you use a paid service.

For those that asked where Google got this information, white-pages or local phone-book.They actually paid a bunch of people to enter this for them in a database. That is how most get the info.

Check out white-pages.com,infousa.com,reverselookup.com if you Google phone number look up sites you will find thousands of sites. This is not limited to USA, it is also for Canada and other foreign countries.

Anyone who has a listed # is on google unless they requested it to be removed. The only exception I have found in the past is unlisted, and cellphone numbers.

We are in the information age, stop being so scared. Sorry, that's the way I feel, I hope everyone has removed his/her info from the phone book because that's pretty much the same thing. And this same discussion that probably occurred when phone books first came out.
