Read Before You Write

I have read a lot of blogs out there recently that have talked about plagiarism, proper conduct, etc.  It is quite common to get very excited about Active Rain for good reason.  It is an incredible resource of information that boggles the mind.  To be able to communicate with others from the same and related professions and share ideas FREE OF CHARGE just makes this site amazing.  I know of no other site that does what Active Rain does and the friendships and referrals that can be established is second to none.

From the posts and comments I have read recently it is quite obvious that many membars are unaware of what is the right in terms of writing and proper conduct. Active Rain is like many of us that buy a new tech toy.  We want to get started right away without reading instructions...especially us men...Ha Ha (I knew you women would love that!).

I encourage all new members and all seasoned members to read On-line Resources which is on the home page of Active Rain. It is awesome and has a lot of great tips to keep us all on the right path. It even has a "How to" in terms of adding photos, etc.  There are other great resources on the front page as well such as "Getting Started".  If we all read these tips in their entirety it can save us a lot of headache.

Happy writing my friends and "Keep up the great work!"

Well said George - and great advice on getting started - hope many will actually read this first.

A good reminder is always nice to read...this is a great resource at no charge...or is there really no charge? Think about the time you spend reading and posting and try to quantify that as to how much it costs you in time...but it's almost like continuous learning points...too bad we can't get credit for it...

This is such a great forum.  To keep it as good as it is, everyone needs to follow the etiquette.  It is good to post reminders such as this every now and then.

It's a great forum and it would be nice to see it tidied up a bit.  We need a blog exercise class so the new people can condition their blogging muscles.

George, as normal you bring to the table some common sense. Most here on AR on new to the posting world and can use as much information as possible. Thanks for reminding us to read the instructions.

George,

Isn't it amazing that some members take it for granted that this is all free and might not be forever. I get so many different things out of it. Business, friendships, new ideas, great reading and free promotion..where can you get yourself on the top of google for free? I get calls all the time to pay for this but remember it does not include the social part. I think if some really knew how lucky they are they might think before speaking.

Well said. Before developing an understanding about a product or tool, many just dive right in. In the long run, that could prove to be a dis-service to them and others.

I'm one of those people who is "Instructions-challenged" - so, of course, I didn't read anything before I started using ActiveRain.  Having this little reminder in your post may help people like me realize that they've missed something that might be helpful.  In fact, that's how I've found some of the simplest features of this site - through posts I've read.  Thank you!

Hi George,
Good advice for beginners.  I must admit I was one of the Guilty ones that jumped in before reading all the guides and rules and as a result learned some lessons the hard way.  Unfortunately, I tend to go head first into most things I do, instead of stepping in 1 foot at the time.

Hi, George!  I didn't know anything about the resources pages at all when I started.  There are tons of information available that one doesn't have time for.  I think that if we apply basic common courtesy and sense, there shouldn't be any problem.  However, we're not all the same so I see the problem.  I wish there were an orientation period before a new member starts to blog. Thanks for the reminder.

George, I too am a man. That means I don't download Google maps, I put things together "right out of the box" and I didn't read "getting started" before I got started. OK. You make me feel guilty. I'll read it. I won't like it, but I'll read it.
