The Real Beauty of Active Rain

About 4 years ago I was putting together a complex grill for my mom.  My nephew came over while I was assembling the grill.  I was struggling a bit even after reading the instructions when my nephew which was 8 years old at the time said "Can I help uncle George"?  I said "just a minute son, I am trying to concentrate".  He would ask me 2 more times if he could help and in frustrated voice I would reply to him "Just a minute, I am trying to think".

Finally he asked yet another time and I finally said "O.K. son, what do you want to tell me"?  He replied "I think this piece goes here and this other piece goes over there".  After 15-20 minutes of frustration on my part even after reading the instructions my nephew showed me how to put the grill together without even reading the instructions!

My point is that anyone can help someone else at any given time. It doesn't matter the age or the experience. This is the beauty of Active Rain.  I have never seen so many ideas offered by so many incredible members all for free!

I have also been impressed with the willingness of members to help when we email them or call them for assistance. I recently phoned member Brenda Brown from Oregon regarding a question I had.  She was kind enough to call me back on a weekend and had the patience of a Saint with me.  Thank you Brenda.

I have heard other members tell me they read someone's blog and they liked it but some of the content was over their head.  I encouraged them to contact the author to explain the content.  They were reluctant to do this they didn't want to sound stupid but I kept encouraging them to contact the author and I hope they did.

To be able to help someone with a marketing, technology or some other issue and watch their world change for the better is incredible to see and we all have the opportunity to help one another.

If you write a blog that someone does not quite understand please take the time to answer emails and or calls and answer questions. Keep in mind what you write may be easy for you and others at your level to understand but may leave the majority in the dust.

If you need help please email or call the author and ask for help.  Be open minded unlike what I was with my nephew! If the author will not respond ask another member to help you.

Active Rain should be much more than sharing of information.  It is also about helping others when they ask for and need help.

Comments

ooooh...I agree, I've contacted a couple people for various reasons and the response has always been positive. I really enjoy Active Rain and everyone seems to be willing to help. I know I don't have the most experience out there and people know more about a specific subject than I do. So it is great to get to pick each other's brain!

Great points. We should ask for help when we need it and give it when asked. Thanks

I never read instructions but I know I received a few calls from Margaret Rome for example but it was to tell me she loved what I was doing...but I was expecting a call to critique which is fine...I was so complimented and I really appreciated it.

George, I couldn't agree more. I am constantly getting emails from members needing advice about their business or just wanting to ask me some questions. I always take the time to respond. Helping each other is what it's all about. I'm flattered that they would want advice from me.

George- While I have found just about everyone here helpful, I never thought to ask outside of their blog in a personal email. Duh! Good suggestion! Thank you.

George, I couldn't agree more.  It didn't take me long to figure out I was in a safe place in which I could ask questions.  I can certainly give credit to ActiveRain and it's members in allowing me to gain the confidence and knowledge I need to be successful in my business.

Hi, George!

I can't stress enough how I'm being benefited here on AR--it feels as though my network of friends grew suddenly!

You're right, we all have something to offer here on AR and even outside of AR.  Come to think of it, we are here for a reason, as we exist in this planet for good reasons...

It's okay to ask, and yes, for help!

The best part of your nephews assistance was he didn't read the instructions.  Real men do not read instructions.  At least that is what I tell my wife.  LOL

All kidding aside, I have been contacted by members for help and I have contacted members for help.  That is one best things on Active Rain.

George- Great story regarding your nephew.  There isn't enough good things I can say about this community and the majority of members involved in it.

Here Here George, You are absolutely right. In Fact I would even go so far as to say that it should be in bold print when you sign up for AR. This is truly the most giving and patient community that I have ever had the pleasure of belonging to. And I thank you as well my friend for being patient with me when I have asked for your help and you gave it so willingly.
