Active Rain - Is it Due To Explode Due To Realtor Magazine?

For those that have been members of Active Rain from the beginning and even for those that have recently joined.  If you have been amazed by the growth of Active Rain to date, wait to see what happens if Realtor Magazine does what they tell me they are going to do.

Last night (6/5/07)a representative from Realtor Magazine sent me an email stating verbatim: "I'm putting together an article on the promotional benefits of having a presence on Active Rain, and would like to include you in the piece".  His email asked me to answer the questions below so it could be included in his article.  He asked me to reply by the deadline of 6/7/2007 so that the article can be prepared for printing. The questions asked were as following:

QUESTIONNAIRE: KEY PROMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING
for: George Tallabas

  1. Have you noticed a spike in your sales since establishing a presence of Active Rain?
  2. What percentage of your sales do you attribute to contacts made via Active Rain?
  3. How many hours did it take for you to establish a presence on Active Rain?
  4. How much time do you spend each week further promoting your Realty on Active Rain?
  5. Overall, do you believe establishing a presence on Active Rain has been worth the effort?
  6. Why/Why not?

Please include:

Your Name:
Your Title:
Company Name:
Company City/State Location:
Company Web Site Address:
The type of Real Estate You Sell:
ActiveRain(IMPORTANT) The Approximate Dollar Value of
Your Sales Last Year:
(Thanks again. -JD)

If indeed this is for real and if indeed Realtor Magazine prints the article promoting Active Rain be prepared for an explosion of membership beyond yours or my wildest imagination!  What would a doubling or tripling of membership in a matter of a few months mean for all the members and what do you envision for the future of Active Rain?

George, AR was in Realtor mag this month as well. I know they had a pretty big blurb a few months ago and we had many folks join overnight. I too got an email and I hope they do make AR the feature next month. That would be a very good thing.

A quality article would be wonderful - I would love to see some agents have more google juice than homegain and the likes of sites like that - I believe AR can do that quickly

That's great news for you and AR. When AR gets inquiries like this it means that the good word is getting around and will benefit everyone within the community. Growth is healthy, but sometimes too much too soon can hurt.

Jeff, I pretty much agree with you.  If it's not instant gratification, many agents won't continue.  And of course you're right, it IS work.  But I definitely see a red flag here.  Hmmmmm......

George - I received the same email. We'll see. It would be great for the PR, and yes, nice to have more members. But members who participate, not those who join, set up a profile and disappear never to be heard from again. There seem to be a good number of those (guess that is to be expected).

Hmm -- very interesting.  I do wonder what the agenda is here.  There was some discussion in DC about regulating blogs -- and it is difficult to know what is really going on.  I guess growth can be bad if it is too explosive -- We shall see what develops.  In the meantime, I am enjoying the contacts I have made on AR and the people I have met.  It is a great vehicle to share ideas and get to know each other.

George, Good post and as for your question " what do you envision for the future of Active Rain? "

My guess would be that a phenomenal growth might be out of this groups ability to handle. A growth of extreme magnitude would make it an attractive commodity. I forecast a sale in the near future if quick growth is obtained.

I can't keep up with all the new ideas and gadgets that I come across on ActiveRain right now.  I really don't think I need any more information at this time.

There's probably a few great agents in every market area already that I could refer to.  Do I really need more?

More agents here means more competition for good search engine results.  What if 5 articles are written about a specific neighborhood?  Google only serves up a maximum of 2 pages from any given website for any given search.  So only 2 of the posts will show up for a search for that subdivision name.  The other three won't be found.

I think the term that comes to my mind is "the law of diminishing returns".  Hopefully it will be the opposite and we'll have some kind of multiplier effect.  I guess we'll just wait and see.

George,

I got a similar email. I followed his link and it looks like he is most definitely a working journalist.  A freelancer.  I did get a different set of questions. More oriented towards the networking aspect of AR.  We'll see what happens.

My Prediction:  AR membership will swell and we will have thousands creating blogs for about 6 months.  After that, if it takes that long, people will fall away and the "core" who believe in the value of this medium for both personal and consumer benefit will remain.  But in that mean time hopefully we'll get a few more great thinkers on board.  Just my opinion.

Posted by Chris Lengquist, Kansas City Real Estate Investing (Ad Astra Realty) almost 12 years ago
We have over 33K members now, but I've not noticed more then around 1300 max online at any given time. I suspect that even though there may be many who join, few will do anything with it, just as we have now. It's hard enough now to get people to even join, let alone set up their profile or blog. Do we think the new members will perform any differently???

I haven't gotten any business from AR yet, but have had a couple local consumers contact me anonymously to ask questions about the market. I find that I am higher on the search engines with my profile on AR, which is one reason I like the group.

Don't worry too much about an influx of members. People will just be jumping on a band wagon, and once they find out the wagon is really an old Chevy that needs constant work, they will soon jump off because they can't handle the maintenance.

George, as for your question..." what do you envision for the future of Active Rain? "

At this point in time there are 33,333 members. Yes, with more AR exposure this number will be over 100k. This I believe would be great for the Industry we are associated with but...I also believe the AR gods would have to adopt strict blogging rules.

Currently AR blogs have very informative ideas, thoughts, problem solvers, etc., but there is a lot non-sense blogs that do not relate to anything (which I call BFP's...Blogging For Points). With a potential in the future of over 100k bloggers, this would have to be curtailed. Also, can you imagine responding back to 100's of comments. We would have no time to perform our jobs.

I don't think we'll see an explosion - maybe 7-10 days of increased sign-ups and then back to normal. It has absolutely nothing to do with ActiveRain. Many agents simply just don't understand the benefits of the web or have the mindset to really make it work for them.
Posted by John Novak, Henderson, Las Vegas and Summerlin Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace) almost 12 years ago

Depending on how the article is written, I think the membership will boost. Realtors are always seeking for ways to build their business. And, ActiveRain is definitely a business building block

I'm with the mindset that John Novack above has. Not only that but most realtors don't want to take the time to participate in something like ActiveRain. Look at how many are already on here that don't particpate.

I think you're giving REALTOR magazine way to much credit. Most Realtors don't read it.

For four years in the NY section (now they have their own magazine NYSAR) they have been advertising a free web page and profile on the NYSAR site to all members.

I am perhaps among 10 REALTORs in the whole state of NY that took 2 minutes to get a free web site

It's no surprise to me that eventually major REALTOR resources will begin to tout the virtues of belonging here -- there are just too many helpful and highly informative posts for this site to not continue to grow.  Of course, finding associates with whom we want to associate can still be a little challenging, but what a great resource AR has been for me.

While my Des Moines Real Estate business is just really getting going, I have found a lot of helpful tips here and people outside of my marketing area seem so willing to openly share.

Paul Zane Pilser wrote a book once called "Unlimited Wealth" and in it he challenged the notion that the world is filled with scarce resources, and that sharing knowledge with others will limit your ability to be successful.  To the contrary, his argument was that human ingenuity is unlimited, and that necessity is the mother of invention.  Whether people warned of an upcoming end to the supply of coal, or natural gas, or water, or fossil fuels -- all have been dispelled by the creation of new technologies to locate more raw resources, as well as methods to create alternative supplies.

I believe the same may very well be true for Real Estate sales.  The mentality of scarcity of supply of buyers and sellers creates the desire to hoard information.  Companies that follow this paradigm are slowly losing market share until one day, they will wake up and discover that the consumer has demanded free access to information and only those who are providing it are actually sought after by the consumer.

We AR users really appreciate this access, and George -- we really appreciate your sharing this!

What do you think of the validity of the statement: " As for REALTOR mag - they are antiquated at best when it comes to technology and there is politics involved. The fact that they would recommend a blogging platform that doesn't get a REALTOR's message out as well as nother platform should be an excellent indication of their competence!"

This was sort of a "your mother wears Army boots" kind of comment from someone on an entry on my blog where I mentioned and linked to this entry.   It was one of the least contentious comments on the entry. What politics would there be involved between ActiveRain and REALTOR® Magazine?

Hmmm Maureen, I don't know what to think about that comment.  I know the magazine is read but I don't know how much credibility it is given.  I know I also skim through it and look for something that catches my interest.  Thanks for the comment and have a great day.
