Those of you that know me well know that I am a movie buff. I love movies, especially ones with good messages. Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorite actors of all time. I think he is awesome.
My family and I went to see the new movie Fracture last night and Sir Anthony didn't disappoint me yet again. In the movie Hopkins makes a comment to a young attorney that the young attorneys flaw is that he is "A Winner" referring to the great track record this young attorney had in his years with the prosecutor's office. There was a degree of arrogance and cockiness with this young attorney as well.
When we focus so much on "The Prize" we don't take care of detail and that leads to trouble, unhappy customers, and potential legal issues.
I remember a young Realtor in our community that decided overnight he was going to be a real estate "Investor". He was bragging to me one day that he was taking his parents money, buying a foreclosure, and was "Going to make a lot of money". When I found out which property he was bidding on I warned him the loan being foreclosed on was a 2nd deed of trust. He arrogantly told me I was wrong because he investigated it and the loan being foreclosed was a 1st.
The next time I spoke to him he was as white as the walls of my home and he has a dark complexion! Turns out the foreclosed loan was a 2nd and he found out hours after he purchased the home at trustee's sale that there was a 1st for $65,000 his parents had just inherited. He was in such a rush to make a lot of money that he didn't ask the right people the right questions. I felt bad for him and his parents.
My point here is that when we start focusing on "The Prize" as our main focus we will stumble and sometimes we fall hard.
When we adopt a "Service" attitude that comes from deep inside us a lot of good things start to happen and our life takes on a deeper and purpose filled meaning. We start caring about taking care of others instead of focusing on "The Prize" at the end of the rainbow.
